Robert Edward Auctions is starting the new year with a bang, presenting an extraordinary Encore event featuring a vast collection of baseball memorabilia. With nearly 3,700 lots up for auction, this event is one of the most extensive and remarkable showcases of sports history.
One of the standout items in this auction is a signed receipt from Alexander Cartwright, a prominent figure in the early days of baseball, dating all the way back to 1842. This exceptional piece not only holds immense historical value but also represents a direct link to the sport’s early origins.
Another fascinating artifact from the 19th century is the incredibly rare 1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco John Clarkson “Throwing” card. Graded EX 5, this PSA-graded card featuring the Hall of Fame pitcher is the only known example in existence, making it a true collector’s gem.
Also included in the auction is a personal scorecard belonging to Harry Wright, a significant figure in early baseball history. This one-of-a-kind item dates back to a June 22, 1883 game between Philadelphia and the Providence Grays, which Wright managed. The scorecard, scored in both pencil and blue ink, bears Wright’s signature and has been officially graded as a 9 by PSA.
The auction opens with an SGC 1.5 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, setting the stage for an impressive array of Mantle-related items. In addition to the Mantle memorabilia, the auction boasts over 250 autographed items, featuring signatures from iconic baseball figures of the past.
Brian Dwyer, President of REA, expressed his excitement for this Encore Auction, highlighting its strength as one of the company’s best offerings. He emphasized the diverse selection of signed items and iconic cards, appealing to collectors of all preferences.
